How Much Money Do You Need to Start Your Business?

Every time I give a business workshop or training, I get some form of this question:

How much money do I need to start my business?

Actually, it’s usually more of a definitive statement like, “I wish I could start my business, but I don’t have the funding.”

What I’ve learned is that most people have very unrealistic expectations of what it really takes to get a business off the ground. Many seem to think that you have to have a lot of money to start making money.

The reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

The truth is, you can start most businesses in any state for a very modest registration fee. I’ve lived in 3 different states and never paid more than $50 for a business license. Throw in a box of basic business cards from Vistaprint and your total startup costs are less than $100.

So if you want a number, there’s your number. Less than $100.

This number not only surprises people, but even makes some folks ANGRY. Yes, I’ve had people argue with me over this.

“But don’t I need expensive equipment? Don’t I need office space? Tons of inventory? A fancy website? A shiny new MacBook?”

No, nope, nah, not at all and absolutely not.

I started my first business back in 2008 with a free Blogger blog and a free Gmail account. (Thanks, Google!) I emailed the link to my blog to a conference organizer for an event in DC and got invited to speak there for free. I ended up landing my first PAID gig from someone in that audience. And I’ve been a professional speaker ever since.

Getting the word out about your business is hard work, but it can all be done for pretty close to FREE when you’re just starting out.

So here are some better questions…

Why do you keep arguing for your limitations? Why do you keep repeating all these excuses for why you can’t get started when you have someone sitting here telling you how you can? Why are you so interested in holding yourself back?

This is why some people get argumentative when presented with solutions for starting their business:

Because they already hold the belief that they need a ton of money to get started.

When they find out that this is actually a FALSE belief, they feel disappointed in themselves because they realize they could have gotten started a loooong time ago. They could have been making money by now.

Well, the good news is that now you know the truth. You DON’T need thousands of dollars to get your business off the ground.

But you do need to be prepared to put in a lot of TIME.

And if you want to SAVE lots of wasted time and energy trying to do it on your own, one of the best things you can do is get training, mentorship and support so you don’t get frustrated and give up on your dream too soon.

If you’re ready to finally launch your business, I invite you to apply for a complimentary “Launch Your Business” Strategy Session. It could very well be the most important conversation you have this year.
